Occasionally, he used only a bass trombone. Most often, he used alto, tenor, and bass trombones to double the respective voices, and a cornett to double the sopranos. In accordance with tradition, when Bach called for trombones at all, they usually doubled choir parts. A complaint he wrote to his superiors explains why he didn’t make more extensive use of it. One piece in particular shows how well he understood the trombone. For one thing, as it turns out, Bach composed the earliest extant music that calls for soprano trombone. At 15 he walked to Lüneburg to work as a chorister and study at the convent school of St. Throughout his life he made extraordinary efforts to learn from other musicians. Johann Sebastian Bach was born at Eisenach into a musical family and in a town steeped in Reformation history, he received early musical training from his father and older brother, and elementary education in the classical school Luther had earlier attended.
